The History of Mindful Self Care Programs
Mindful Self Care Programs began in Adelaide in 2008 by Dr Maura Kenny with a view to offering health professionals the opportunity to explore how a mindfulness practice could help managing stress both in the workplace and at home.
Recognising that many healthcare staff are both tired and time poor, in 2013 she developed a 6 week Introduction to Mindfulness course for healthcare and other professionals to provide of a taste of what was possible with this approach. Shorter practices and exercises are taught that can be woven into even the busiest of lives, and which open up some space to live more easily, to breathe more freely, and to renew one’s energy, productivity and enjoyment of a life in the health care profession.The courses introduce the concepts and practices of mindfulness meditation with elements of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Compassionate Mind Training integrated throughout.
Data collected over several courses in South Australia, Victoria and Singapore showed that this shorter course and briefer daily practice still led to statistically significant reductions in stress and increase in self compassion.
